Fife school pupils gained fantastic new technology skills recently as they took part in the annual Mastering Multimedia Schools’ Challenge at Adam Smith College.
The event, which was organised by the College’s Computing Department, took place over two days and was held at the Priory Campus in Kirkcaldy where 45 secondary school pupils gathered to participate in workshops to equip themselves with the necessary skills to design and implement a website. Workshops included planning, animation, audio, graphics and web design. The second day consisted of the competition itself where each team submitted a website built using all the new skills they had learnt from the workshops the previous day.
Douglas McMillan, Department Manager for Creative Industries at Adam Smith College, judged the final entries along with staff from the Computing Department, all of whom were very impressed with the high standard of the websites that each team submitted.
Out of the nine team entries Balwearie High School were the final victors, winning a £100 prize for their school from Adam Smith College, along with Adobe software, courtesy of Adobe who sponsored the event. In addition, the individuals in the winning team received a high street voucher and a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements. Second prize went to Buckhaven High School, and third prize went to Viewforth High School. Each team also received a glass trophy for their school.
Shona Irvine, Computing Lecturer at Adam Smith College, who organised the event commented, “The event was a great success and we were very pleased with the high standard of websites that the pupils produced.”
“The schools commented on what a superb experience it was for the pupils to get the chance to learn new skills and use the multimedia software. Some of the pupils involved were so enthusiastic about the event that they are already looking forward to next year’s competition.”
